Enrolled, degree-seeking students have access to two (or more) advisors. This collaborative team is your primary resource for academic matters, exploring opportunities and finding solutions to problems. Your relationship with your advisors is a crucial component of your success at BSU.
Finding your advisors
- In Navigate Student Support: In MyBSU, click/tap the Navigate Student Support tile. Log in and then click/tap Appointments. Then click/tap the My Team tab. You may also use this tool to schedule appointments for advising!
- In e-Services: In MyBSU, click/tap the e-Services tile, and click/tap on Courses and Registration, then View/Modify Schedule. Your advisors are listed near the top.
- In your Degree Audit Report (DAR): Log in to e-Services, and click/tap on Academic Records, then Degree Audit. Follow the instructions to run your DAR and your advisors will be listed near the top of the report.
Contacting your advisors
- Once you have your advisors’ names, use the BSU Directory to look up contact information.
- For most students, your faculty advisor is a professor in the department of your declared major. Your staff advisor works in the Advising Center, TRIO or in your department’s main office.
Meeting with your advisors
Your faculty advisor is your primary resource for academic progress including registration, degree/major planning, graduation planning and choosing elective courses. They are also a great resource for mentoring in your major, learning about research and internship opportunities and helping you synthesize your learning with your career aspirations. We encourage all students to contact your faculty advisor within the first three weeks of the semester to introduce yourself and establish an ongoing relationship.
Your staff advisor is a troubleshooter who can help you find resources, forms and services. They can help you understand your degree audit report (DAR), guide your decisions about adding/dropping/withdrawing, help you choose a major or submit petitions to release holds and much more. In general, staff advisors can help you navigate BSU systems so you can efficiently complete your degree. Your staff advisor is an excellent go-to if you aren’t sure where to start with a question or concern.
Changing your advisor
To request a change to your faculty advisor, send an email to advising@cnlawyer18.com with your StarID, and the name of the faculty advisor you wish to select. Note that we will do our best to honor your request, but there may be times when a different faculty advisor will be assigned to you.
Changing your major
To change or add a major or minor area of study, complete and submit the Student Personal Data form to the BSU Records office.
If you change your major, you don’t need to specify a particular faculty member from your new major. We will assign you an advisor from your new major’s department.
